Kevin, I have seen it happen. I have even been guilty of doing the same thing.
The way I look at it is you cannot protect the world from misused data. You have to trust the people around you to use data appropriately (or at least hope they do).
I also like to mine data for all I can get out of it. However, I must keep in mind the reliability of the data. After all regardless of the base size if we find a new major discovery, the first thing we need to do is confirm the results. And that does not mean reworking the same data. It means another experiment. It is all about risk/reward.
